Benthic foraminifera as bio-indicators of drill cutting disposal in tropical east Atlantic outer shelf environments ArchiMer
Mojtahid, Meryem; Jorissen, Frans; Durrieu, Josiane; Galgani, Francois; Howa, Helene; Redois, Fabrice; Camps, Roger.
We present a study of benthic foraminiferal. faunas from the outer continental shelf off Congo (tropical West Africa), with the aim to determine the impact of the discharge of oily drill cuttings on the sea floor environment, to judge the regenerating capacity of the benthic ecosystem, and to investigate the possibility to develop an environmental monitoring method for open marine continental shelf environments, based on benthic foraminifera. We studied the spatial distribution and microhabitats of living and dead foraminiferal faunas, sampled in April 2003, 4 years after the end of disposal activities, in the upper 3 cm of the sediment at 9 stations (about 180 m depth) offshore Congo, that were subject to various degrees of pollution by oily cuttings from...

Modelling trace metal (Hg and Pb) bioaccumulation in the Mediterranean mussel, Mytilus galloprovincialis, applied to environmental monitoring ArchiMer
Casas, Stellio; Bacher, Cedric.
Bioaccumulation of metal within an organism results from interactions between physiological factors (growth, weight loss, absorption and accumulation), chemical factors (metal concentration, speciation and bioavailability) and environmental factors (temperature and food concentration). To account for such interactions in the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis, we combined bioaccumulation and Dynamic Energy Budget models. Field experiments were conducted to measure uptake and elimination kinetics for two metals (Hg and Pb) in three Mediterranean sites with differences in contamination levels, and to calibrate the models. Metal uptake from water and from food was considered separately. Metal elimination resulted from reproduction and/or from direct excretion....

Utilisation de Posidonia oceanica (L.) Delile comme bio-indicateur de la contamination métallique ArchiMer
Lafabrie, Céline.
The coastal zone of the continental shelf contains a high ecological richness. However, this zone is very fragile towards xenobiotics ; the pollution of this environment can be damaging to the structure of the biocenoses and to the productivity of the ecosystems. Metals, contrarily to numerous contaminants, are normal constituents of the environment at a trace level, but are all toxic above a certain threshold. At the end of the 1970s, several researchers proposed the use of organisms to evaluate the quality of the marine environment ; it is in this context that the bio-indicator concept arises. The seagrass Posidonia oceanica (L.) Delile, endemic of the Mediterranean Sea, has been the subject of several works proposing to use this species to determine the...
